Discover Umbria, the green heart of Italy

Walking through one of the food and wine regions of Italy

Walk the footsteps of St. Francis while enjoying never ending views of 'meravigliosa' Umbria. Feel his humble spirituality and undying legacy as you make your way through mythical forests, vineyards, farmlands and olive groves. You will start in the pilgrimage town of Assisi situated against the slopes of Mount Subasio. Discover the Umbrian-Roman origins of the town and explore places relevant to St. Francis' life including the magnificent Basilica and other sites important to the Franciscan Order. Traverse the beautiful rural landscape of Saint Francis wood until you reach Spello where the streets are lined with flowers and towers. Walk to the peak of Monte Subasio and enjoy astonishing views of Umbria before visiting the 13th century church of Santa Maria Maggiore displaying Pinturicchio's dazzling fresco cycle, fresh and glowing after recent restoration. Still in a daze, you continue to discover the ancient walls and cobbled streets of Montefalco as well as Gozzoli and Perugino's sumptuous frescoes on display. Go further into the hidden gems of Umbrian countryside, passing vineyards, rolling hills and medieval paths and a bridge that lead you to Spoleto, a romantic and artistic town displaying a series of frescoes, including the stunning Coronation of the Virgin, by medieval artist Filippo Lippi.

This is a scenic Grade 4 Walk. The walks follow good paths, most of them unsealed country roads, with some sections where you're required to have a good sense of orientation. The walks range from 8 to 15 kilometres (3 to 6 hours). The first walk on Day 2 (walking to the peak of Monte Subasio) is probably the most challenging being 15 kilometres long and with a steep climb, however, the panoramic views Umbria on the top of the mountain are sure worth the effort.

This tour is available daily from 1 January to 31 December.
