Day 1 Arrive in Cape Town

Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most popular destinations. This vibrant, multicultural city offers a lively mix of urban and suburban life, bustling day and night spots, outdoor activities, and opportunities for relaxation. Fringed by two oceans with stunning white-sand beaches, Cape Town is a city immersed in nature.

Upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport, look out for your name on a board held by an English-speaking Guest Service Officer. After collecting your luggage, you will be assisted and guided to your onward service. Relax as you are transferred in a shared 7-seater vehicle to Southern Sun The Cullinan Hotel, located near the V&A Waterfront, where you will spend the night.

Day 2 Cape Town

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a scheduled half-day morning tour of Table Mountain and Cape Town with an English-speaking guide. Drive through the city centre, passing iconic landmarks such as the Castle of Good Hope, built in 1666 by the Dutch East India Company, City Hall, and the Grand Parade. Travel along Adderley Street to see St George’s Cathedral, seat of the Anglican Diocese of Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and pass the Company Gardens and the colourful Malay Quarter, also known as the Bo-Kaap.

Discover Cape Town’s rich history, explore the art of diamond cutting and the craftsmanship of South Africa’s master jewellers, and uncover the legacy of the nation’s Diamond and Gold Trade. Guests may choose to ascend Table Mountain by revolving cable car (weather permitting), enjoying views of native wildflowers, the famous silver tree, and breathtaking panoramas of the city and its beaches. On a clear day, it is even possible to see Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and Cape Point in the distance.

Please note:  This is a shared tour, not a private one. It departs daily at approximately 08:00 AM and returns around 12:30 PM. However, the tour does not operate on the following dates: 24–26 December, 31 December, 1–2 January, and 24 May. While the scheduled departure time is 08:00 AM, it may vary slightly depending on the hotel locations of all guests. The bus will pick up guests from their respective hotels before starting the tour. The exact pick-up time will be communicated to guests the day before the tour.

The remainder of the day is free for guests to enjoy at leisure. From the Cullinan Hotel, you’re perfectly positioned to explore Cape Town — take a stroll to the vibrant V&A Waterfront, enjoy shopping and dining, or ask our team about optional excursions such as a harbour cruise.

Today, choose between two Optional Extras* that each give you a great indication and exploration of the area.

Option 1: Scheduled Full-Day Cape Peninsula Tour
Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Cape Peninsula on a full-day guided tour. Travel along the Atlantic coast, passing Camps Bay and Hout Bay, before exploring the Cape Point Nature Reserve with its unique wildlife and dramatic scenery. Continue via False Bay to Simon’s Town, where you can visit the famous Boulders Beach penguin colony (entrance fee to the viewing at own expense). A perfect way to experience the landscapes, wildlife, and charm of Cape Town’s coastline. Note: This is a shared tour, not a private one.

Option 2: Private Half-Day Bo-Kaap Home-Hosted Cooking Experience
Immerse yourself in Cape Town’s rich culture with a traditional Cape Malay cooking experience in the colourful Bo-Kaap district. Learn authentic recipes in a local home, take part in preparing dishes, and enjoy a delicious three-course meal. The venue is located approximately 10–15 minutes by car from Southern Sun The Cullinan Hotel. Day 4 Cape Town Cape Winelands

Today you will be transferred in a private 7-seater vehicle with an English-speaking driver from Southern Sun The Cullinan Hotel to Mont d’Or Franschhoek, located in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

The Cape Winelands is a region of exceptional beauty, stretching across the Western Cape, from the West Coast and Klein Karoo to the Hermanus and Overberg areas. Nestled among quaint Cape Dutch homesteads, majestic mountains, vineyards, and enchanting trees, it is easy to feel as though you have been transported to Bordeaux — yet this is uniquely South African. The famed wine regions of Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek offer outstanding wines, gourmet dining, and picturesque settings perfect for relaxation or exploration.

Accommodation for the next two nights is at Mont d’Or Franschhoek in a double room. Mont d’Or Franschhoek is a luxury guest house in one of the most celebrated parts of the Winelands. Known as the French capital of South Africa, Franschhoek is renowned for its world-class wines, cuisine, and art. The guest house is centrally located within walking distance of restaurants, galleries, museums, and boutique shops. Day 5 Franschhoek Wine Tram – Hop-On Hop-Off Experience

Today offers a delightful self-paced exploration of the Franschhoek Valley aboard the renowned Wine Tram. Departing between 08:45am - 10:00am from either the Franschhoek Terminal or the Groot Drakenstein Terminal (depending on the line), the tour duration can range from 2 to 7 hours, allowing guests to tailor their experience according to personal preferences.

Guests may choose from eight distinct tram lines, each showcasing a selection of wine estates across the valley. The hop-on hop-off format provides the flexibility to disembark at any stop to explore, dine, or enjoy tastings, before rejoining the tram or tram-bus to continue the journey. At the terminals, guests can enjoy a coffee and browse merchandise before setting off.

The Wine Tram experience includes a combination of double-decker tram and open-air tram-bus transport, a host-narrated tour, and a single wine tasting during the journey.

Day 6 Winelands Knysna (Garden Route)

Your day begins with breakfast before checking out of Mont d’Or Franschhoek. A private transfer will take you to Cape Town International Airport for your short flight to George – the gateway to the Garden Route. Upon arrival, a private transfer with an English-speaking driver will take you to The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa, your base for the next stage of your adventure.

The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most celebrated travel experiences, renowned for its diverse scenery and wealth of attractions. This enchanting corridor between the Western and Eastern Cape offers something to delight every traveller. Embark on a full-day adventure to explore the stunning beauty and rich character of Knysna, one of the Garden Route’s most cherished destinations. Next, head to the privately-owned Featherbed Nature Reserve, a pristine gem located on the Western Head of Knysna, accessible only by ferry. Day 9 Knysna Durban

After breakfast, check out from The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa before your private transfer to George Airport. From here, you will take a short flight to King Shaka International Airport in Durban. On arrival, you will be met by your driver for a private transfer to The Oyster Box Hotel, where you will be warmly welcomed and settle in for your stay.

Durban, located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, is South Africa’s largest coastal city and enjoys a subtropical climate with warm weather throughout the year. Renowned for its golden beaches and excellent swimming conditions, Durban also boasts a rich cultural tapestry. With the largest Indian population outside of India, the city is alive with vibrant flavours, scents, sounds, and colours.

After checking in, enjoy some free time at The Oyster Box Hotel, relaxing and making the most of its renowned hospitality. Take the evening at leisure as you prepare for the next stage of your adventure, which begins tomorrow with the start of your Rovos Rail journey.

Day 10 Rovos Rail: Depart Durban

Following breakfast at your hotel, a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver will take you from The Oyster Box Hotel to Durban Station to commence your Rovos Rail adventure. Your journey begins in the morning as the train departs Durban, winding through the breathtaking Valley of a Thousand Hills. Settle into your elegant suite and freshen up before enjoying lunch in the dining cars. In the afternoon, visit the renowned Ardmore Ceramics Gallery, where artists take inspiration from nature and Zulu folklore. Back on board, dinner is served as the train makes its way towards Ladysmith, passing by the historic memorial to Winston Churchill near Frere, the site of his capture during the Boer War.

After breakfast, transfer to Spionkop Lodge for a morning of choice: explore the historic Battle of Spionkop site or enjoy a nature drive in the 11,000-acre reserve. Return to the train for lunch while passing the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains. In the afternoon, experience a game drive in Nambiti Reserve, a malaria-free Big Five bushveld sanctuary. Dinner is served en route to Vooruitsig.

Day 12 Rovos Rail: Disembark in Pretoria Johannesburg

Breakfast is served until mid-morning as the train winds its way across the gold-rich Witwatersrand and Highveld, passing historic mining towns such as Balfour and Heidelberg. A leisurely lunch onboard precedes your arrival at the end of the journey at Rovos Rail’s Capital Park Station in Pretoria. From there, a private transfer with an English-speaking driver will take you to 54 on Bath, a stylish retreat in the heart of Johannesburg.

This award-winning hotel, renowned for its striking red-brick façade and elegant interiors, perfectly blends modern design with classic sophistication. After breakfast (time permitting), check out from Mdluli Safari Lodge and take a private transfer with an English-speaking driver to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for your flight to Victoria Falls*. Upon arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, a private transfer will take you to Insika Lodge, your base for exploring one of Africa’s most spectacular destinations.

Zimbabwe is celebrated for its raw beauty, world-class safaris, and breathtaking landscapes. The iconic Victoria Falls, known locally as the “Smoke that Thunders,” plunges 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge and shares its waters with neighbouring Zambia along the mighty Zambezi River. Stroll through the lush, mist-shrouded rainforest that lines the Falls, stopping at famous vantage points such as the Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, the Boiling Pot, Cataract Island, and Livingstone Island. Enjoy a free day at leisure in Victoria Falls, relaxing at Insika Lodge or exploring the surrounding area. Insika Lodge, whose name means “Pillar of Strength” in isi-Ndebele, is beautifully situated next to the golf course and draws inspiration from the awe of Victoria Falls, which can sometimes be seen from as far as 50 kilometres away as it rises like a pillar of mist.

Guests may also choose an Optional Extra full-day excursion*:

An unforgettable wildlife experience Chobe National Park in Botswana, one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. This unforgettable excursion begins with a transfer from Victoria Falls to the Kazungula Border Post, where your Botswana guide will meet you and escort you to the banks of the Chobe River.

Start your day with a morning river cruise, gliding along the water as you spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible array of birdlife. Tea, coffee, and biscuits are served on board to enhance your experience.

At midday, enjoy a delicious lunch at the Chobe Safari Lodge, set on the river’s edge with stunning views. After lunch, the adventure continues with an afternoon game drive through Chobe National Park, offering up-close encounters with the park’s famous wildlife, including large herds of elephants, predators, and antelope species.

Full day Chobe National Park excursion in Botswana

An unforgettable wildlife experience Chobe National Park in Botswana, one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. This unforgettable excursion begins with a transfer from Victoria Falls to the Kazungula Border Post, where your Botswana guide will meet you and escort you to the banks of the Chobe River.

FAQs

What is included in the price?

All onboard accommodation, meals, all beverages except champagne, and off train excursions are included. Some items such a pre & post transfers, flights, gratuities, and personal expenses are not included.

Can someone with mobility limitations travel on the Rovos Rail?

Should you or your guests have any special requirements or mobility issues, please do let us know ahead of your luxury train journey. We can accommodate guests with walking difficulties although we recommend an able-bodied passenger accompany guests. We regret that the train is not suitable for wheelchair-bound passengers. Should you have mobility impairments/restrictions or special requirements, we urge you to inform your Agent at time of booking.

Are children permitted onboard?

We do accommodate children, but we kindly ask parents to be sensitive to the adult nature and atmosphere of the train. Long journeys are not recommended for under 13s. Children between 0-2 years old are not permitted to travel. There are no child-minding facilities or activities available for children on board.

Is there Wi-Fi onboard Rovos Rail?

To maintain the spirit of travel of a bygone era, the use of mobile phones, laptops and essentially anything that has the ability to disturb other passengers is confined to the privacy of suites only.

The signal strength may be weak while the train is in motion, so it is recommended to consult your phone service provider and verify the proper network settings are enabled – as there is no Wi-Fi onboard.

Can Rovos Rail accommodate special dietary preferences?

We cater for food allergies provided a detailed request has been made at that time of your reservation. If a special request has not been made, the chefs will endeavour to prepare suitable meals with the ingredients available on board. We regret we are unable to prepare meals requiring strict religious observance in the preparation.

Is there a dress code when onboard Rovos Rail?

  • Days on board are smart casual: Neat, conventional yet relatively informal in style combining casual and formal clothing pieces.
  • Dinner on board is formal: For gentlemen, a collar and tie are mandatory while a jacket is optional. For ladies, a cocktail/evening dresses or suits. Please respect this dress code.
  • On long journeys guests enjoy themed evenings where guests can dress up accordingly or opt for smart casual: 1 x “AFRICA” evening and/or 1 x “1920s” evening. See itineraries.
  • Off-train excursions: It's recommended to have comfortable walking shoes, sun lotion and hats. If required, blankets and rain capes are available.
  • Game drives are on open vehicles so please dress accordingly: mornings can be cool then warm up considerably; afternoons can be warm then cool down considerably. Please look up average temperatures as a guide.

Can I smoke onboard?

The Club Car is used to host the smokers on the train in a public area and as an overflow facility adjoining the Observation Car. With a glass passage wall, guests can comfortably watch the scenery on both sides of the train.

Do I need to check-in prior to arrival?

Please check-in a minimum of one hour before departure. Should you wish to visit our museum or do a site tour at Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria, we suggest arriving two hours prior to departure. If Pretoria is your arrival point, we suggest delaying your pick-up so you can enjoy the site tour. Passports are required at check-in. No vouchers are required. Luggage will be tagged and placed in your suite on board the train where you will find a full itinerary pack.

Are there luggage restrictions?

It is possible to store luggage in your suite under the bed or above the door on a luggage rack, which provides ample space for storage. There are no luggage restrictions on board although we do not recommend more than two large suitcases. On selected long journeys, guests are provided with a Rovos Rail Tog bag that can be used for overnight trips or hand luggage on aircraft. A soft bag is preferable on plane transfers with a luggage weight restriction of 15kg.

Will I need travel insurance?

As with all holidays and trips abroad, we strongly recommend that you have travel insurance. Please consult with our agents at time of booking and we can assist you with this.
