Overview

Some places on Earth still hold secrets. On the Hudson Bay Odyssey, an extraordinary seven-day journey along the southern coast of Hudson Bay, three distinct worlds converge to create one of the planet’s most remarkable wildlife sanctuaries. Here, in the Cape Tatnam Wildlife Management Area, the boreal forest whispers its ancient stories to the tidal flats, while the tundra stretches endlessly toward the horizon.

The journey begins with a flight south from Churchill, soaring over the vast expanse of Wapusk National Park and the historic York Factory trading post. This is merely prelude to what awaits at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, where wilderness luxury means waking to polar bears moving across the morning tide flats.

Each day unfolds with new promise as expert guides lead guests through this untamed realm in specialised all-terrain vehicles designed to navigate the intricate maze of waterways along the southern Hudson Bay coastline. Here, polar bears share the stage with black bears emerging from forest shadows, wolves that can appear on a whim, and moose wading through channels rich with migratory birdlife. Every wildlife encounter happens at ground level, offering a perspective that transforms observation into intimacy.

As evening light paints the sky in impossible colours, return to the lodge’s welcoming embrace. Over delicious tundra-inspired cuisine, watch the wildlife through floor-to-ceiling windows. When darkness finally claims the sky, step onto the viewing deck where the aurora borealis might emerge to dance above this convergence of worlds.

There are some places in life you never forget. Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is one of them. Situated in one of the wildest places on Earth, areas along the coastline here can make you feel like you’re on another planet. And something spiritual floats on the winds.

Day 2 Winnipeg Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge

You will depart Winnipeg for Churchill early in the morning. Upon arrival in Churchill, you’ll be met by expert staff and transferred to a private charter for your one-hour flight to Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge. Keep your eyes open and your cameras ready for wildlife sightings en route to the lodge. Upon arrival, hosts will provide a tour and show you to your room. Lunch will be served soon after, and before heading out on your first excursion, you’ll be thoroughly debriefed regarding your stay in polar bear country. Your first day includes an afternoon of exploring the coastline in search of the “Great Ice Bear.” Back at the lodge, enjoy appetisers followed by a signature tundra-inspired meal. Evenings typically include an informative lecture or slideshow presentation narrated by one of Churchill Wild’s knowledgeable guides or staff. On clear nights, there may also be a chance to view one of the spectacular aurora borealis displays common at this latitude.

Day 3 - 5 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge

Each morning, after a hot breakfast, guides will outline a plan for the day’s excursions. If there are bears near the lodge, the morning tour may be delayed to take advantage of these photo and observation opportunities. The lodge is always staffed, so there is also the option to stay behind and take photos of the wildlife around the lodge or simply relax and enjoy the pristine view.

Daily outings may include the following, depending on weather and ground conditions: Coastal exploration of the tidal flats and Hudson Bay shoreline using a combination of human power (walking!) and specially outfitted all-terrain vehicles. Routes will vary, but ample time will be provided to photograph polar bears and the other wildlife that inhabit this unique environment. Exploration of the river deltas and vast beach ridges of this pristine area, or staying close to the lodge to take advantage of opportunities to photograph polar bears and other wildlife. Churchill Wild staff will monitor the skies after dark and provide a gentle wake-up call if the northern lights make an appearance.

Day 6 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge Winnipeg

After another hearty lodge breakfast, air transfers will begin back to Churchill. Have cameras ready for the return flight, as it provides excellent opportunities for great aerial shots. Back in Churchill, you’ll spend the day with a tour guide exploring Churchill and the surrounding area, learning about its rich history as a seaport and ex-military town. The tour will include stops such as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the Polar Bear Jail. Along the way, the guide will point out murals commissioned in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls mural festival. Before a group dinner, there will be free time to shop for last-minute souvenirs at the unique gift stores in Churchill.

The flight south to Winnipeg will take place that evening. Upon arrival, collect bags, exit through the arrivals doors, and return to The Grand Hotel.

Our holidays suit every demographic, from couples to singles, to retirees to families and everyone else in between.

Can you book my international airfares?

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

  • Travel on a specific airline of their choice
  • Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
  • Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
  • Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
  • Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia. It is your responsibility as the traveller and/or travel booker to meet all government entry requirements.
