Overview

Combining the comfort reminiscent of legendary European trains with the amenities and technological advancements of the 21st century, El Expreso de la Robla boasts a youthful aesthetic. This vibrant and modern train provides an opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Castile and León.

Built in 2009 with its primary purpose being a school train for port intermodality courses, El Expreso de la Robla smoothly shifted its focus to providing tourist excursions between educational sessions. After the conclusion of its educational programs, the train continued to conduct tourist journeys across the narrow-gauge network of Northern Spain.

Day 1 Bilbao León

Depart from Bilbao to Espinosa de Los Monteros. Luggage drop-off is scheduled at 2 pm in Bilbao’s La Concordia Train Station. The reception begins at 3 pm as the train sets off for Espinosa de Los Monteros. A coach trip is planned to tour the town of Frías and the Tobera waterfalls. The day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay in Espinosa de los Monteros.

Day 2 Espinosa de Los Monteros Cistierna

Whilst enjoying breakfast onboard the train, you will reach Mataporquera. Upon arrival, thecoach will transport you to the stunning landscapes of Palencia Romanesque along the Camino de Santiago, visiting Carrión de los Condes, Frómista, and Saldaña. After touring the town and some leisure time, proceed to explore the Canal de Castilla and the Romanesque church of San Martín, followed by free time and lunch.

In the afternoon, step back in time with a visit to the Roman Villa of La Olmeda, renowned for its impressive mosaic collection. Returning to the train, El Expreso de La Robla will whisk you to Cistierna, where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night.

Day 3 Cistierna León

Depart from Cistierna to León. Enjoy breakfast while travelling to San Feliz. A coach trip is planned to visit the city of León, exploring the Old Town, Cathedral, and San Isidoro. The journey concludes with lunch and the end of the trip at Hotel Real Colegiata de San Isidoro, around 2 pm.

STANDARD COMPARTMENT (UPPER & LOWER BERTH BUNKS only):
All compartments on El Expreso de La Robla feature bunk beds, two per compartment, along with amenities such as a luggage closet, reading light, air-conditioning, background music, loudspeakers and telephone. The modern and youthful ambiance ensures a comfortable rest. Each compartment includes its private bathroom equipped with a hydromassage shower, washbasin, toilet, and hairdryer. The electricity supply operates at 220 V. The train is entirely interconnected, allowing passengers to move freely throughout its length. With four sleeping cars, each car comprises seven compartments.

Can you book my international airfares?

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

Travel on a specific airline of their choice
Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia. It is your responsibility as the traveller and/or travel booker to meet all government entry requirements.
