Overview

Located within the heart of Desolation Sound, Klahoose Wilderness Resort resides upon Homfray Channel between the Coast Mountain peaks of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast and the Northern Islands of the Salish Sea known to many as Desolation Sound. This is a resort that reflects the Klahoose traditional values and offers an immersive exploration into this pristine region rich in diverse wildlife, wilderness, and cultural significance.

Desolation Sound has been referred as the “Serengeti of North America” for good reason, given its abundance of large marine and terrestrial mammals. Orca and humpback whales, porpoises, harbour seals, and dolphins can be seen throughout the year. Bald eagles, osprey, and great blue herons are just three of dozens of avian species that reside in this region. Inlets of the Desolation Sound are famous for one of the most robust populations of grizzlies in the world. Grizzly bear viewing season is August-October.

The spectacular Lodge at Klahoose Wilderness Resort provides an intimate environment and impressive 6,100-square foot timber structure hewn of local cedar.

Toba Inlet is renowned for offering some of the best bear viewing tours in British Columbia, thanks to the consistent sightings of grizzly bears during the late summer and fall salmon run, as well as the intimate and personalized viewing experience.

Guests depart from Klahoose Wilderness Resort, embarking on a scenic one-hour journey by covered boat, passing by stunning Toba Inlet waterfalls and watching for marine life along the way. Upon arrival at the dock, a short bus ride takes visitors to the bear viewing platforms, nestled in the lush temperate rainforest of the Toba Valley, along the glacier-blue waters of a remote wilderness river.

Led by trained Klahoose guides, certified by the Commercial Bear Viewing Association, the tour allows for approximately three hours of bear viewing from fixed, raised platforms. These platforms offer a safe yet close vantage point to observe the grizzly bears in their natural habitat. With six covered platforms positioned along the river and small group sizes, the experience remains intimate and respectful. The sound of the bears' heavy breathing, combined with the rush of the river, creates an exhilarating and unforgettable spectacle—a rare privilege for those fortunate enough to witness it.

Day 1 Vancouver Klahoose Wilderness Resort

Depart for your morning flight from Vancouver South Terminal Airport to Powell River. Upon arrival, shuttle transfer to Lund, where you will be greeted by Klahoose Resort staff. Head to the docks, where you will take a water taxi transfer to Klahoose Wilderness Resort. Enjoy the scenery as you will be travelling through beautiful Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park and Homfray Channel. Arriving at the resort mid afternoon, get settled into your room, where your luggage will be waiting. Enjoy free time to explore the resort before ending the evening with a delicious dinner, paired with glass of wine or beer.

Day 2 Klahoose Wilderness Resort

Start today with a hearty breakfast before heading out on your guided adventure. Guided adventures usually last 5-6 hours. Grizzly Bear viewing season is August to mid October, where guests will get the opportunity to go up Toba Inlet and view bears from the boats and viewing platforms. During the off season of bear viewing, guests will partake in a Klahoose Cultural Boat Tour, which includes a tour of the Desolation Sound and Homfray Channel. Keep your eyes peeled, as there is always an opportunity to see an abundant of wildlife such as whales, porpoises, harbour seals, and eagles. In the evening, dinner will be served, with time for you to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Day 3 Klahoose Wilderness Resort

Start your day with breakfast at the main lodge. Today will be a day at leisure to enjoy Klahoose Wilderness Resort. Feel free to take out the sea kayaks or stand up paddle boards to explore the surrounding area, or partake in a optional add-on tour - Helisightseeing, Heli-hiking, guided boat fishing, or additional boat tours (additional charge).

During the Grizzly Bear Viewing season (August-October), guests will have an additional guided bear viewing adventure today (5-6 hours). Return to the lodge in the afternoon to enjoy your final dinner. End your evening with a beverage by the fire pit, while mingling with other resort guests you may have met along this adventure.

Day 4 Klahoose Wilderness Resort Vancouver

Enjoy one final breakfast at the lodge, before heading to the dock early afternoon for your water taxi transfer back to Lund. Upon arrival in Lund, an airport shuttle will be waiting to take you back to Powell River Airport. From there, connect for your flight back to Vancouver!

Klahoose Wilderness Resort is a 6,100-square foot timber-built wilderness lodge in Desolation Sound, only accessible by water. The resort has different room types, each with a maximum occupancy of up to 4 people. Average accommodation at the Resort is 14 guests to a maximum of 26 guests in full capacity. Facilities include a 3-piece washroom (toilet, sink and shower). Wi-Fi Internet access is available in the main building only (connection is very intermittent due to the resort’s remote location). There are no televisions or radios in the rooms. The resort boasts a series of large decks and sitting areas overlooking the water, wood sauna, as well as indoor sitting areas and lounges. All rooms have ocean views.

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

Travel on a specific airline of their choice
Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
Use their travel agent for this service

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia.
