Overview

The starting point of this amazing itinerary is Orvieto – with its masterpiece, the gothic Duomo cathedral. Then you will proceed onto the fascinating old town of Todi and will continue by following the tracks of St. Francis to Assisi. Your trip will then take you to the beautiful town of Perugia with its Etruscan walls, 16th century palaces and chocolate laboratories, touching also the shores of the Trasimeno Lake. Much more awaits you in this unique tour!

Additionally, participants will have the unique chance of sampling several Slow Food Presidia products (high-quality, traditional food and beverages at "risk of extinction”) and will taste authentic regional dishes at restaurants selected among those recommended by the Slow Food association in their “Osterie d’Italia” guide: small “trattorie” that still use fresh, local produce for traditional recipes.

Slow Food is an organisation that promotes local food and traditional cooking. It was founded by Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986 and has since spread worldwide. Promoted as an alternative to fast food, it strives to preserve traditional and regional cuisine and encourages farming of plants, seeds, and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystem. It promotes local small businesses and sustainable foods. It also focuses on food quality, rather than quantity. It was the first established part of the broader slow movement. It speaks out against overproduction and food waste. It sees globalisation as a process in which small and local farmers and food producers should be simultaneously protected from and included in the global food system.

Arrival at your hotel in San Martino in Campo, near Perugia. Time to settle in and enjoy your welcome dinner at the hotel, with traditional products from Umbria.

Day 2 San Martino in Campo Orvieto Todi San Martino in Campo

After breakfast, morning visit to Orvieto, a stunning town situated on top of a rock offering the most spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. We suggest a tour of the city, including the Duomo Gothic Cathedral.

Stop in Cantine Neri in Bardano, in the outskirts of Orvieto, a winery famous for its outstanding quality. You will experience a wine tasting with local products and light lunch. Before heading off, we suggest a short visit to Adriano pastry shop to try Orvieto’s typical cakes and desserts, including chocolates made with chillies and saffron.

We, then, suggest an afternoon visit to Todi, a splendid medieval town, or Civita di Bagnoregio, a unique small town perched on a rock surrounded by a canyon. Return to your hotel.

Day 3 San Martino in Campo Montefalco Assisi Bevagna San Martino in Campo

Departure to Montefalco, another splendid town situated on top of a hill, offering amazing views over the surrounding nature. Visit the ancient olive groves - 3,000 plants - belonging to the Azienda Romanelli family, to discover the many plant varieties and the extra virgin olive oil production techniques, accompanied with a tasting.

On the road to Assisi, we suggest a stop in Bevagna, an ancient medieval town that has held onto its ancient traditions. Arriving in Assisi, we recommend a visit of the town and the famous Basilica of St. Francis. Proceed to Caseificio Broccatelli for a cheese tasting.

Return to your hotel.

Day 4 San Martino in Campo Torgiano Perugia San Martino in Campo

After breakfast, departure to Torgiano to visit the Azienda Lungarotti: sample their extra virgin olive oil, and visit the MOO – Olive and Oil Museum.

We then suggest to visit Perugia: perched on a hill, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. You may also visit the Perugina chocolate museum, famous all over the world for its Baci Perugina chocolates. Free time to discover the old city and stop at the historical Pasticceria Sandri pastry shop.

Enjoy a dinner with dishes from the traditional Umbrian cuisine at the Osteria i Birbi, part of the "Osterie d'Italia" Slow Food restaurants (Slow Food is an organization that promotes local food and traditional cooking). Return to your hotel.

Today we suggest to discover the stunning Lake Trasimeno, one of the largest lakes in Italy.

You can visit the Azienda Madrevite and its cellars: take a pleasant stroll across the vineyards and sample the olive oils and typical products. Take also some time to discover Castiglione del Lago at your own pace.

Stop for dinner at the Trattoria l’Acquario, where traditional dishes, including the Fagiolina del Lago (Slow Food Presidium) will be served. Trattoria l'Acquario is part of the "Osterie d'Italia" Slow Food restaurants (Slow Food is an organization that promotes local food and traditional cooking).

Can you book my international airfares?

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

Travel on a specific airline of their choice
Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia.
