Day 1 Budapest

Arrivals day in Budapest, where you will be met and transferred to the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace (or similar) for a two-night stay.

Indulge in a delightful welcome dinner within the sophisticated ambiance of this Art Nouveau icon. It's a wonderful opportunity to mingle with your fellow travellers before embarking on this eagerly awaited adventure.

Day 2 Budapest

Budapest is two cities separated by the Danube. The old city of Buda and the imposing Royal Palace, dominates the city with stunning views across the Danube.

Your city tour includes the Castle District, St. Mathias Church, and a panoramic view of the city from Gellert Hill. You will also see the Citadel, the Opera House, St Stephen’s Cathedral, Heroes Square, and the City Park.

Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure – stroll along the banks of the Danube, visit the historic Great Market Hall with its endless variety of delicious foods and wines or head to one of the city’s famous thermal baths for a rejuvenating dip. Alternatively, you can relax at the hotel and indulge in the hotel’s luxurious spa with infinity-edge pool or make use of the state-of-the-art fitness centre.

Day 3 Keszthely & Tapolca

Guests are transferred this morning to Budapest Nyugati station to enjoy a drinks reception in the impressive Royal Waiting Room before boarding the Golden Eagle Danube Express.

A brass band strikes up as the Golden Eagle Danube Express slowly draws into an adjacent platform. The uniformed train staff will then escort you to your private ensuite cabin on board. As you settle in, the train will thread its way out of Nyugati station and will make its way through the autumn landscapes of Hungary to Balaton Uplands National Park.

Emerging from the National Park you will arrive in Keszthely, perched at the very western end of Lake Balaton. This picture-postcard town is filled with grand townhouses and famously the site of Festetics Palace, a lavish baroque home fit for royalty where there will be a short tour of the house and gardens.

From Keszthely you’ll make the short journey by train to nearby Tapolca for the walking tour of the pretty town centre followed by a visit to the town’s limestone cave system and the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful personal boating adventure on the crystal-clear waters of Tapolca’s Lake Cave.

Day 4 Sopron & Holloko

This morning you’ll enjoy a relaxed walking tour in the historic old town centre of Sopron, with the 13th century Fire Tower as its central landmark. Guests will return to the train in time for lunch on board and spend an afternoon of travelling through the autumnal landscapes of the Hungarian countryside.

In the late afternoon, guests will be welcomed to Holloko, a World Heritage Site renowned for its traditional Hungarian 'Paloc' village charm. This picturesque village features white-washed houses adorned with verandas, wooden rails, and hipped roofs. Visitors will receive a warm and hospitable greeting from the local residents and savour a special dinner in the heart of the village, where you can delight in the authentic flavors and culinary traditions of the Paloc people.

Day 5 Egerm Lillafured & Aggtelek

Visit Eger this morning. A city full of legends - for a walking tour of the town which is best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings and the northern-most Ottoman minaret. Following your visit to Eger, take a delightful narrow-gauge train ride from Lillafured through the striking autumnal forests of the Bukk National Park, a Hungarian hidden treasure.

The day ends with an exclusive visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site cave system at Aggtelek. It is the largest stalactite cave system in Europe, with more than 23 kilometres of charted pathways and its stalactite and stalagmite formations are truly spectacular.

Day 6 Hortobagy National Park & Tokaj

In the morning guets have an early visit to the Hortobagy National Park, a vast steppe in Eastern Hungary, and where Hungarian native animals such as the grey cattle still live. You will go on an excursion in the area where you get familiar with the traditional pastoral life.

In the early afternoon, guests will reach the Tokaj region of Hungary. Here, you'll have the opportunity to partake in a private wine-tasting tour at one of the renowned cellars in the area. This region boasts a wine-making heritage that spans thousands of years, with its cellars and vineyards situated at the base of the Zemplen Mountains.

Day 7 Opusztaszer National Park & Szeged

Following breakfast, guests will reach Opusztaszer National Park. Here, you'll have the chance to admire the Feszty Panorama, an oil-painted depiction titled 'The Arrival of the Hungarians.' This artwork vividly portrays the commencement of the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 896 and was completed in 1894 to commemorate the event's 1,000th anniversary.
Next, guests will take a coach to nearby Szeged for a city tour. Szeged is renowned for its charming squares and tree-lined boulevards. During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to savour regional delicacies for lunch at a traditional local restaurant.
In the evening, relish a special farewell gala dinner on board the Golden Eagle Danube Express before returning to Budapest and transferring to the Four Seasons Gresham Palace for the night.

DELUXE CABIN

Travel in some of the finest rail accommodation available in Europe.

Private bathrooms feature a shower with constant hot water, washbasin and toilet. There is a heated towel rail, shaver socket and hairdryer. A range of toiletries and a dressing gown are provided. Cabins have individually controlled air-conditioning, lighting with dimmer switches, individual reading lights, power sockets and a safe.

Co-ordinated fabrics complement wood-panelled walls and brass fittings. Two comfortable armchairs provide daytime seating, and a free-standing chair adds flexibility. Cupboards and a full-length wardrobe provide ample storage whilst the large picture window and full-length mirror enhance the spacious feel. A second window will open for fresh air and for that perfect photo opportunity.

During dinner each evening the living room is converted into two comfortable lower beds by your attendant who is also on hand to bring you early morning tea or coffee.

Superior Deluxe cabins, with private en-suite facilities, offer the ultimate in European rail accommodation in terms of space, facilities, and comfort.

With 12 cabins per departure, each cabin offers comfortable daytime seating with a full-length sofa and two additional chairs. The large cabin also benefits from two full-size picture windows, one of which is openable to add to the bright and airy feel of the interior.

Each evening the cabin is transformed into a luxurious bedroom with a UK-standard King Size bed. All cabins have, as standard, a large double wardrobe with excellent storage space, individually controlled air-conditioning, lighting with dimmer switches, individual reading lights, in cabin Wi-Fi and USB ports, power sockets and a safe.

• The bar lounge: Unwind in comfortable surroundings and watch the world go by as you get to know your fellow passengers and begin long-lasting friendships. It is here that your Tour Manager will also organise a programme of activities. Passengers will receive printed daily itineraries throughout the tour detailing train arrival and departure timings, latest weather forecasts for the next destination and information on the following day’s excursions and activities.

• The Bar Lounge Car and Restaurant Cars will host an entertaining and enlightening range of activities such as language lessons and engaging talks by expert lecturers on local history and culture. In the evening enjoy the sounds of the resident pianist playing in the Bar Lounge Car. Every night the bar stays open until the last person leaves.

• The restaurant car: Enjoy the delights of an on-train breakfast each morning - a wide selection of fruit, cereals, orange juice and cold plates are available from the bountiful buffet.

• For lunch and dinner, you will enjoy fine food, great wines and attentive service in the welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant car. On offer are culinary experiences that reflect the very essence of the countries the train travels through, as well as international cuisine. Vegetarian and other dietary options are also available.

• Meals onboard are a relaxed affair as the restaurant cars can accommodate all guests in a single sitting. Throughout the journey there is an informal dress code, so you can enjoy your culinary experiences in convivial and relaxed surroundings and with an open-seating policy you can dine wherever, and with whomever, you please.

Can you book my international airfares?

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

Travel on a specific airline of their choice
Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia.
