SOUTHERN PORTUGAL

The southern edge of Portugal, The Algarve, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed. The principal city in Algarve, Faro, offers visitors the perfect combination of modern amenities and natural beauty. Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities abound, and scenic gardens and open spaces provide pockets of relaxation...

PORTO

The Portuguese city of Porto is best known for two things: its river, the Douro, an evermore popular choice for river cruises, and its port. But the historic hillside city itself should not be overlooked. One of the oldest cities in Europe, its maze of steep and narrow cobbled streets is home to beautiful plazas, churches and houses with colourfully tiled façades. Porto is a historic and varied city, from the warren of narrow streets that make up the ancient Ribeira district through to the grand plaza of the Trindade district. The region is famed for the production of Port, which is still stored and matured in the vast cellars.

Helpful Information

When to visit

The climate in Portugal varies considerably from one region to another and is influenced by the proximity to the sea, which offers mild winters, especially in the Algarve. In the Porto & Norte area and Centro region, particularly inland, nearer Spain, the winters are colder, although the temperatures are still mild when compared to the rest of Europe. The summers are warm and dry, especially in the inland areas (Trás-os-Montes in north-eastern Portugal and Alentejo).

  • High Season (Jul–Aug): High temperatures are commonplace and warmer ocean temperatures with highs around 28 °C.

  • Shoulder (Apr–Jun & Sep–Nov): Wildflowers and mild days are ideal for hikes and outdoor activities. Lively festivals take place in June

  • Low Season (Dec–Mar): Shorter, rainier days with freezing temperatures at higher elevations. Attractions keep shorter hours, and many beach lodgings close for winter.

Getting Around

Portugal has an extensive railway network, making for scenic travel between destinations.

The One Country Portugal Pass from InterRail gives you unlimited travel on any three, four, five, six or eight days over a month (2nd class and 1st class).

Tram lovers shouldn’t miss the charming relics rattling through the narrow streets of Lisbon and Porto.

Other than river cruises along the Rio Douro from Porto and the Rio Tejo from Lisbon, Portugal’s only remaining waterborne transport is cross-river ferries. Commuter ferries include those across the Rio Tejo to/from Lisbon and across the mouth of the Rio Sado between Setúbal and Tróia.

Self drive holidays give you the freedom to explore your own way in your own time. No early starts, no crowds or being herded around. Portugal’s modest network of estradas (highways) is gradually spreading across the country. Main roads are sealed and generally in good condition. To rent a car in Portugal you should be at least 25 years old and have held your driving licence for more than a year. The widest choice of car-hire depot is at Lisbon, Porto and Faro airports.
