A perfect Battlefields tour for those interested in WWI military history covering the battles of Verdun and the Argonne-Meuse offensive.

Carefully selected memorials, cemeteries and museums in remembrance of the battles of Verdun & the Argonne-Meuse offensive

Stay in a magnificent 19th century building in the historical town of Verdun

4 days with your own private Battlefields Guide

The Battle of Verdun was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most ferocious battles of the First World War.
Your private Battlefields guide shows you the Battle of Verdun from a well balanced, French and German perspective. Verdun has become a WWI symbol showing the determination of the French Army, in much the same way as the Battle of the Somme is to Australians.

Your tour then moves on to the Argonne-Meuse Offensive, which were the largest operations of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI, with over a million American soldiers participating.

Leaving your hotel after breakfast, you'll travel towards Douaumont to visit the Forts of Douaumont and Vaux, the Verdun Memorial, the French cemetery, and the Memorials to both the Jewish and Muslim Soldiers.  The Fort of Douaumont was taken at the start of the Battle of Verdun and was occupied for 8 months by the German Army, who used it as a shelter for its troops.

After lunch, visit the Memorial Museum of Verdun.
Standing at the “Tranchée des Bayonettes”, see some of the destroyed villages, such as Fleury-devant-Douaumont and some of the French bunkers in the area. Spend time on the battlefields before heading

Day 3

This morning, travel to Montsec to see the American Memorial on the ridge. The majestic, classic circular Colonnade commemorates the achievement of the American soldiers who fought in this region in 1917 and 1918. It dominates the landscape for miles around. From the top of the hill, the view extends over Madine Lake and the banks of the Meuse River.

Moving on to Thiaucourt, visit St Mihiel American Cemetery, this large 16ha site became a cemetery in September 1918. It now contains more than 4,100 burials. In the chapel, tablets bear the names of more than 280 missing soldiers.

After lunch, visit of the trench system at the “Croix des redoutes” and the Bavarian Trench. Visit the craters at “Les Eparges”, it was the scene of heavy fighting which was the most brutal in 1915. Between 1915 and 1918 a total of 300 mines were detonated on the Eparges Ridge.

Day 4
Verdun → Argonne → Arras

After checking out from your Verdun hotel, you will travel to Binarville to visit the site of the Lost Battalion. This is a 45 minute walk from the road to the ravine where the soldiers were trapped for five days before
reinforcements were able to relieve them. Only 194 of the originally more than 500 Americans left the forest alive.

Onward to Chatel Chéhéry where a young Corporal York of the 82nd Division earned his Medal of Honor for heroism near the Decauville railway line of Chatel-Chéhéry as part of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

On the road to Varennes en Argonne, stop in Exermont where Capt. Harry Truman commanded “D” Battery 129th Field Artillery. Varennes en Argonne is where the impressive Pennsylvania Memorial stands, it is also the place where the French King Louis XVI was arrested during his attempt to flee revolutionary France.

After lunch, visit the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery, where more than 14,000 American soldiers are buried. The chapel bears the names of nearly 1,000 soldiers reported missing.

Finally, on to the Montfaucon Monument. The hill was an important observation post for the Germans and you will see the ruins of the village which was never reoccupied after the war.

At the end of the tour, you will be returned to Arras (approx 8-10pm), where you may chose to extend your stay.  Additional costs apply.

Can you book my international airfares?

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

  • Travel on a specific airline of their choice
  • Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
  • Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
  • Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
  • Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Why do some packages not offer the ability to Book Now on the website?

If a package on our website does not include our Peace of Mind Booking Plan, it will not be available to Book Now.

Due to the boutique nature and limited capacity of some travel experiences offered, they have strict payment and cancellation policies. (e.g., a remote bear lodge in Canada with only a few cabins).

Although technically possible, we have decided that it is impractical for us to try and sell these type of travel services on-line. We believe it is important that such product is discussed, so that we can ensure these strict payment and cancellation policies are understood before we proceed with a booking.

For such product we may act as an agent only for the principal suppliers. Where we act as agent, your contract for the delivery of travel arrangements will be with the principal supplier and will be subject to their Booking Conditions.

We will advise you prior to confirming your booking if we are acting as agent and we will confirm the details of the principal supplier. Our responsibility to you where we sell travel arrangements as agent for the supplier is specified in the ‘Responsibility’ section of our Booking Conditions.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia. It is your responsibility as the traveller and/or travel booker to meet all government entry requirements.

How does a Travel Agent make a booking?

How do I start a Booking?

  • On any page that has Book Now simply follow the booking process.

  • To confirm a booking only the refundable deposit is required.
  • An agency credit card must be used for this initial payment.
